The Tulameen is Black in Coalmont

People started noticing it yesterday.Tulameen at bridge This morning it was so dark you couldn’t see the bottom. One person went down for a swim and was horrified. “I’m not going in there!” Tonight it is still the same.

Apparently the Tulameen is clear above Collins Gulch and you can see the black water flowing in at that point. Most of Collins runs through the Smart property. Bob Smart says the water was clear yesterday morning, and when he came back in the afternoon it had turned black.

It’s hard to see what the actual substance is. It doesn’t look oily, and it doesn’t look like a creek washout. It’s just black. The effect on fish and other biota is, of course, also not known yet. §
