The Coalmont road offers one of the most exciting drives in BC, but not this afternoon.
At 2 o’clock the road was closed because of a snow slide. It was initially thought that it would take three or four hours to clear. Here in town, we could hear the helicopter and some blasting. Luckily, the job was done by 4:30 pm. People leaving the mine after work had to wait in Coalmont while the work was being done. There was a lineup by the gate, which was closed for the first time in some years. Others took the opportunity to hole up in the saloon.
This is the second time we’ve had a road closure this winter. Fortunately the last one was less than half an hour. We are fortunate to have such good access to the rest of the world and this is because the road is cleared twice a day. In the winter the snow is typically plowed more often than that.
Warmer weather isn’t exactly welcome at this time of the year. We’ve had temperatures near, or above, freezing in the last day or so, and it is forecast to go up to +3 °C. However, these official forecasts have been woefully wrong and daily highs will probably be considerably higher for a few days. We can expect more problems. §
